Prasnottara Ratna Malika (рдкреНрд░рд╢реНрдиреЛрддреНрддрд░ рд░рддреНрдирдорд╛рд▓рд┐рдХрд╛) of Adi Shankara is a collection of 67 verses comprising of questions and answers pertaining to both spiritual and temporal living. This book comprises of the sanskrit verses and their english translation.

Many of the answers are so accurate that we find ourselves transported for a moment into a sublim state of peace and silence. At the same time in some rare cases, the answers to some questions do not seem to be given by a highly enlightened soul like Adi Sankara. It is generally considered that this text was
authored by Adi Sankara though some scholars do not agree with this. We do not know if some of these verses are later interpolations.

However, this text is a boon for seekers of self-realisation.

Hitherto, apprehension about Sankara’s teachings as sublime/profound and tough to understand by common man has been completely shattered with this book/work. It is so very true and applicable even today for every one in every walk of life. Read it/cherish it/apply it and get benefited.

  11. Dr. Raghavan says:

Going through this Maalika, we can see that Shankara was deadly against women. (Dwaaram kim ekam narakasya naree etc.). His venom comes out by equating women as gateway to hell (and other verbal attacks). Perhaps he might have got his encouragement from Gita which degrades all women as “born in Paapa Yoni”. Shankara did not acknowledge that he came to this world because of a woman-his mother. Its highly derogatory to keep the old writings in high esteem because it is written by rishis or sanyasis. Indians should come out of such glorifications, then only it will progress an advanced country.

First of all let me say that this website is not meant for discussion or debate. The aim of the site is to share Sanskrit books which are in the open domain. If you wish to have a meaningful debate with real scholars on this topic, please post your comment at Bharatiya Vidvat Parishat Google group – https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/bvparishat

Now, let me reply to your comment.

      1. Sankara was a man of wisdom and was totally free from hatred or aversion for anyone. To familiarize with Sankara’s attitude towards women, you may read his ‘Matrupanchakam’ and ‘Devyaparadha Kshamapana Stotra. In the latter he says ‘рдХреБрдкреБрддреНрд░реЛ рдЬрд╛рдпреЗрдд рдХреНрд╡рдЪрд┐рджрдкрд┐ рдХреБрдорд╛рддрд╛ рди рднрд╡рддрд┐’ – There can be Kuputra (fallen disobedient son turning away from Mother), but there can never be Kumata (Mother turning away from son permanently).
      2. In the verse quoted by you, рджреНрд╡рд╛рд░рдВ рдХрд┐рдореЗрдХрдВ рдирд░рдХрд╕реНрдп рдирд╛рд░реА, the acharya is addressing a seeker who is striving for Moksha. The advice given to a male disciple is equally applicable to a female disciple too. In that case, the verse would mean ‘man is the door to Hell’. Here the word ‘рдирд╛рд░реА’ stands for ‘desire for sensual pleasures’. A mumukshu (seeker of moksha), who is not free from the desires for sensual pleasures, will ever remain entangled in Samsara.
      3. In the Gita verse you quoted (Gita 9.32), the word рдкрд╛рдкрдпреЛрдирдпрдГ is not used as an adjective of ‘women’. It is meant for those living beings that are born in lower wombs i.e. those of animals, birds, etc. Traditional commentators give the examples of Jatayu, Gajendra and Bhusundi in this context. Please refer to the commentary by Jagadguru Rambhadracharya – https://jagadgururambhadracharya.org/рдЧреБрд░реБрдЬреА-рдХреЗ-рд╢рдмреНрджреЛрдВ-рдореЗрдВ-рднрдЧрд╡рдж/

Doctor you are an educated person. How do you use such casual language without understanding the real meaning of anything? I am shocked. First off, because you have bad karma you took birth so he says papa yoni. He never degraded women. He says we should be rid of this birth-death cycle and desire especially on woman must be banished. He bhashyam on Soundarya Lahiri extols Goddess and womanhood. Please read him correctly before commenting. May Adi Shankara bless you.

  16. Hampa. Nagarajaiah says:

Scholars like R.G.Bhandarkar,A.S.Altekar,S.Sreekanthashastry,M.Govinda Pai, Suryanath Kamath, M.M.Mahishawadietc.,have establishedin unambiguous terms that the author of Prashnottara Ratna Malika was Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga(814-877), the Rashtrakuta emperor. It had only thirty verses in Sanskrit and later adding (interpolations)some more verses it was attributed to Shankaracharya. I subscribe to this view because the quality and structure of this little work is not befitting the stature of Adi Shankaracharya.

  17. Damodaran.C says:

I appreciate Sankaraachry as all Advaita works. Also Ashtavakra Geeta
Panchadasi ,Bhagavat Geeta etc.I didn’t see Prapancha saara.
